Dear Team members, Please find attached a composite, probably reasonable complete, list of the near-Earth IP shocks in 1996-2006 that I have compiled and which may be useful for your own studies. Several shock lists do exist, but all are incomplete in various ways. In this list, I have tried to combine these lists, and have also examined the plasma and field data to verify that the shocks are at least visible in these data. The event lists I have examined are: The MIT (Justin Kasper) shock database. The shock parameters are calculated using several methods and the results merged to give mean or median values. A subset of shocks observed at WIND and ACE are examined, but the shock list is not complete, especially for ACE and for recent years where the focus is on those shocks associated with intense geomagnetic storms. At the moment, I note that this database has been removed from the MIT website, perhaps because Justin has moved on? ACE shock list (Chuck Smith; http://www.ssg.sr.unh.edu/mag/ace/ACElists/obs_list.html). This is probably reasonably complete, but there are no shocks prior to the launch of ACE of course. Parameters are calculated for most, but not all shocks. Where two solutions are given, I’ve generally included here the “automated” solution, unless the other solution is clearly more accurate e.g. from comparing errors. Note that the solutions do not always agree with the MIT results. This could be due to for example the use of data from different S/C e.g. ACE vs. WIND, different data selection and analysis methods, etc. WIND shock list reported by Berdichevsky et al., JGR, 2000, 10.1029/1999JA000367 This includes a subset of events in in 1994-mid 1997 with calculated parameters. SOHO “Shockspotter” list (http://umtof.umd.edu/pm/). This is compiled using an automated “real-time” procedure using only plasma data. A confidence level is assessed for each identification. Typically I found that some of the “shocks” were in fact other discontinuities when the magnetic field data were added, in particular those of lower confidence. In other cases, the magnetic field data confirmed the shock identification. Geomagnetic storm sudden commencements: It is well known that many SCs are associated with the arrival of IP shocks, and this association was found to be true in many cases. However some SCs were clearly associated with non-shock-like solar wind structures and removed from my list. A few shock-like features not included in other lists were identified at the times of SCs. A caveat is that the strict identification of a shock requires analysis of the R-H conditions, and this has not verified for some of the events listed, in particular those only appearing on the Shockspotter or SC lists. On the other hand, energetic particles may be accelerated by features that have not steepened into shocks. For example, the shock-like feature on May 4, 1998 is not steep enough to be a strict shock, but evidently accelerated particles, and I have included it in my list. The attached file includes a subset of the parameters included in my summary file. These include: The shock date and time. The list from which the shock time is taken. Note that a given event may appear in multiple lists, especially the more energetic shocks. Those that are indicated as Shockspotter or SC events do not appear on any of the MIT/ACE/Berdichevsky lists. Unfortunately the times are WIND-centric since I started out compiling the list using the MIT WIND database. Whether the shock is a fast forward (1) or reverse (2) shock. I’ve suppressed a handful of slow shocks. My assessment of whether the shock is likely to be associated with a corotating interaction region (=1). Theta Bn from the ACE shock list or another (non-MIT) list; Average ThetaBn from the MIT shock list; Shock speed Shock compression The IMP 8 0.88-1.15 MeV proton intensity (MeV s cm**2 sr) **-1 in the vicinity of shock passage. (Note that saturation occurs in very intense events, and there are data gaps, in particular in recent years.) My assessment as to whether there is an unrelated SEP event in progress at the time of shock passage( =1) from examination of a wide range of particle data at energies from ~100 keV to ~100 MeV. “2” indicates that there is an unrelated particle event commencing close to the shock that could contribute to event averages. Please let me know if there are any typos! As part of this analysis, I created summary plots of the particle intensity in the vicinity of many of the shocks. To make these accessible, in case they are of use for example in interpreting event averaged spectra and understanding spectral roll-overs, I have placed the files for 1998-2006 in a Picasa web album at the following URL http://picasaweb.google.com/ihrich3/ShockPlots?authkey=mHeV2nGTEbg The files should be in event order based on the file name, which includes the event date (e.g. 980430, hence shocks in 2000 show up at the beginning of the album). If a plot for a shock of interest is missing, let me know and I’ll add it to the album. In some cases, a plot that contains more than one shock might be out of order and appear later in the album because of the way that the file ordering by name is carried out. Unfortunately, it’s a little hard to read the dates in the thumbnail views and the filename can’t be displayed as the caption which would help to identify a plot of interest. The figures (generally) show: Green vertical lines indicate probable shock passages. The ACE/EPAM electron rates at two energies, useful for identifying new injections. ACE/ULEIS oxygen and Fe intensities at three energies. According to Mihir Desai (if I recall) the lowest energy data shown may not be completely reliable for assessing the Fe/O ratio. Energetic proton intensity profiles at 65 keV to 67 MeV from the ACE/EPAM and SOHO/ERNE instruments, showing the evolution of the event with particle energy. Note that ERNE saturates in large events, a common signature being a decrease in intensity when other instruments indicate an increase. The solar wind magnetic field intensity, density and speed from either the ACE level 2 64-s or NDDSC Omni 1-minute database. These are ~equivalent, except for the solar wind propagation time from L1, but on occasion, there are fewer gaps in one database. Note that the OMNI data, which may be ACE high resolution data mapped to the Earth, sometimes show artificial “ringing” rather than a clean transition at a shock front due to the mapping process. Some of the plots may contain artifacts such as extraneous lines, data that are out of range, that I didn’t take the time to fix. The shaded regions in some plots are the intervals used in Mihir’s studies of the Fe/O ratio in the vicinity of shocks. The complete album of files can be downloaded, but this requires installing Google’s (free) Picasa software. I could also write them on a CD and send a copy by snail-mail if this is more convenient. Hope this is a useful summary of the shocks during most of cycle 23!
